Fall weather has given me the urge to bake, and baking means pie most of the time around our house. It’s true; I married a man whose favorite dessert is pie. As long as it has the word pie at the end, he’s ready to eat a piece.
He recorded the movie Michael when it came on recently because he enjoys hearing Dorothy (Andie MacDowell) sing the song she has written about pie. For those of you who haven’t heard it or have forgotten it, take a few minutes to watch the clip.

Like my husband, I grew up eating homemade pies, especially on holidays. My mom’s go-to-cookbook for pies was her paperback copy of Farm Journal’s Complete Pie Cookbook published in 1965. Then when I married, my grandmother gave me a hardback copy of that same cookbook. I’m sad to say that I ordered one from Farm Journal in the 1990’s to give as a wedding present, and it had been completely revised. Most of the recipes were new and the old ones that stayed had been “modernized.

I invite you to journey with our family through the original Farm Journal cookbook over the next couple of months. I will post a photo and recipe each week as we work our way through the pie alphabet. (I’m a little behind on reporting our progress, as we started with A several weeks ago. Therefore, I’ll be posting A-C over the next day or two.)

Do you like pie? Do you have a favorite pie recipe that’s been passed down to you? I’d love to hear about it!
